Go Green For Earth Day 2018!

To celebrate Earth Day on April 22nd, we’re sharing some great ways to go green with your pet.

Eco-friendly waste bags: Using a bag made from recycled materials or one that is biodegradable can help reduce the environmental impact of dog waste and new plastic.

Buy in bulk: Consider buying items like pet food and cat litter in bulk, which not only saves trips to the store, but also minimizes plastic and cardboard packaging that will likely end up in a landfill.

Donate: Instead of throwing out unused supplies, consider donating them to a local shelter or our pet resort. Items like towels, food and water bowls and gently-used toys are often on a shelter and our pet resort’s wish list. Just be sure to clean the items with non-toxic cleansers before donating.

Spaying or neutering: This helps reduce the overpopulation in shelters, euthanization rates, and the overall carbon footprint animals contribute to.

Happy National Puppy Day from Pet and Home Care!

Today is National Puppy Day!

Did you know that March 23rd is National Puppy Day? Here are some pawesome ways to celebrate this fun day with your pup!

  • Buy a fun new chew toy or treat
  • Donate supplies to a local animal rescue
  • Book a puppy play date at Pet and Home Care’s Pet Resort
  • Check on your dog’s medical records to ensure all vaccines are up to date
  • Puppy-proof your yard as spring weeds and poisonous mushrooms start to grow
  • Follow our Instagram for your daily dose of puppy cuteness!

Beware of Poisonous Springtime Plants!

Spring is officially here! While its nice to enjoy the fresh air and blooming flowers, it’s important to keep in mind that some plants and fertilizers can be toxic to your pet.

Review our springtime safety tips so your pet can roam hazard-free around the yard!

  • Flowers with bulbs such as daffodils, tulips, and hyacinths can be dangerous to dogs, especially the skin toward the bottom of the bulb when ingested. Try not to let your dog dig up the garden to prevent vomiting and diarrhea.
  • The unsuspecting yard mushroom can be very toxic to dogs, so its recommended to remove any mushrooms spotted growing in your yard.
  • Be wary of lily flowers including tiger, day, Easter, stargazer, red, and wood lilies, which are highly toxic to cats. Lily pollen, leaves, stems, and even water from the vase can cause severe kidney damage to kitties.

Beware of Winter Pet Hazards!

This winter has already brought record-breaking low temperatures and extreme weather conditions. Keep your pets safe this winter season by avoiding these cold-weather hazards.

Antifreeze: Pets are attracted to the sweet smell and taste of antifreeze, which can leak from cars and form puddles in your garage or driveway. Antifreeze is extremely toxic to pets, and causes permanent damage to kidneys and vital organs, and can be fatal. The chemical is absorbed quickly once ingested so it is crucial to immediately take your pet to the vet if exposed.

Salt: While our staff appreciates a salted sidewalk, it’s important to check your pet’s feet after coming back inside to make sure there are no salt crystals stuck in paw pads, which can lead to painful cracking or chapping. Try purchasing pet-friendly ice melts that minimize toxicity.

Hypothermia & Frostbite: Extremely low temperatures greatly increase the risk of hypothermia and frostbite for pets. Ears, paws and tails are especially susceptible to frostbite as these sensitive areas will naturally have less blood flow in the cold weather. Bundle up your fur-buddy in a pet sweater or coat and keep outside time to a minimum.

How To Have A Pet-Safe Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving is a time to feast with the whole family, though subtle dangers can linger for your pet. Here are a few tips to help avoid an unwanted trip to the vet.

  • No Bones About It: If you decide to treat your pet to a small bite of turkey, make sure it’s fully cooked and boneless.
  • Guard The Trash: Keep garbage secured and away from pet access, no snacking on those plastic wrappers or onion scraps, Fido!
  • Trim The Fat: Rich and fatty foods like gravy and poultry skin can cause painful indigestion for cats and dogs, so avoid giving table scraps. If you must sneak a tiny share, stick to unbuttered vegetables like green beans or sweet potatoes.

Make Back To School Easy On Your Pets!

Dogs and cats are creatures of habit, and the back to school rush inevitably means more time home alone for your pet. Pets feel the change in the daily routines we’ve become accustomed to during the summer months. With this change, many dogs can become anxious, nervous and may even display destructive behavior due to separation anxiety. We’ve got some tips to help make the transition easier on your pet:

-Gradually readjusting feeding times and potty breaks can ease your pet into his new schedule. Animals thrive on routine, and do best when their habits are shifted incrementally rather than abruptly.

br />

-Make your departures seamless by leaving the house calmly and without a long goodbye, which can trigger your dog. Some owners find it helpful to leave treats around the house, hunting for yummies is a great distraction!

-Exercise! Book Pet and Home Care walking services to give your pooch a midday potty break and some much-needed outdoor play time!

Keep Calm and Swim On! Helpful Hints A Healthy Aquarium

Pet and Home Care looks after all types of critters-including ones with fins! Here are some tips for keeping your fish and aquatic petshappy and healthy in their aquarium!

The Humane Society recommends a 20-gallon tank for new fish owners. It may seem larger than you were hoping to care for, but a larger tank actually stays cleaner than a small one. Your fish will thank you for the extra room to roam!

When finding a location for the tank, stay away from direct sunlight, windows and doors. Be sure to acclimate your aquatic pets properly by setting up the tank early and testing pH levels and temperature. Purchasing a tank thermometer will ensure your fish are always safe and comfortable.

Its absolutely vital to have a tank filter. Without filtration, fish waste can poison the water, resulting in sickness or even death. Fish also love to hide out in small crevasses, make it fun by having safe accessories like ceramic sea castles or plastic sea plants.
