5 Must-Read Tips to Know Before Adopting a Cat

5 Must-Read Tips to Know Before Adopting a Cat

June is National Adopt a Cat Month! This is also the height of kitten season and most end up in shelters. According to the ASPCA, 3.2 million cats can be found in shelters every year!

A pet is a big responsibility but adopting a cat is one of the most fulfilling and rewarding things you can do. So, before you head to your local animal shelter or rescue service, below are:

5 Must-Read Tips to Know Before Adopting a Cat

1. Do not declaw your cat!

Clawing is natural and healthy behavior for a cat. Their claws are how they defend themselves. I know what you’re thinking…but they will destroy everything I own! Did you know that removing a cat’s claws make it more difficult for them to use the litterbox and causes lasting physical problems? Declawing a cat is even banned in many countries!

2. Do neuter/spay your cat.

Spaying or neutering your cat helps prevent uterine infections, tumors, and various cancers. Also, your female cat won’t go into heat and your male cat won’t stray away from home. Sounds like a win-win to me! Also, remember how many cats can be found in shelters? When there is no more room, healthy cats are often euthanized.

3. You will need essential supplies on hand.

Just like you, as a human, need plates and cups, food and water, and the Wi-Fi password; there are things you MUST have before you adopt a cat. Be sure to visit your local pet shop and pick up cat food, a water bowl, litter box, toys and a scratching post. Most other things can wait until your cat is acclimated to your space.

4. Yes, cat’s need grooming too!

How often you need to brush depends on your cat’s coat; sometimes once a day, or even a few times a week. Since we are NOT declawing our cat, don’t forget to trim those nails. Be consistent with their growing so they know what to expect. Trust me, cats don’t like surprises!

5. Vet, Vet, Vet!

The veterinarian is not just for when something is wrong. Ask your friends or family for recommendations. Schedule an in person visit to check on the location, cleanliness and organization of their office. Whichever vet you decide to choose, ensure your kitten gets his or her vaccinations and your adult cat their well visits.

No matter if you’re young or old, live in a house or an apartment, remember our feline friends when considering a new pet! Adopting a cat helps reduce the shelter populations, ensures an animal has a loving home, and it’s also good for YOUR heart!

We’d love to hear your adoption stories. If you do adopt a cat this month, please let us know by leaving a comment below. Happy National Adopt a Cat Month!

Why Your Fur-Kid Should Be Your Valentine’s Date This Year!

Why Your Fur-Kid Should Be Your Valentine’s Date This Year!
Valentine’s day is approaching and whether you’re happily single or content in a relationship with a significant other, you may be secretly thinking…..”ugh”. And if you are, don’t beat yourself up! NBC News reports that one in five people would prefer to spend Valentine’s Day with their pet over their partner.
So why might you consider for-going a “people” date for a fur-kid date for Valentine’s Day?
1. Does your fur-kid talk? I didn’t think so. Moving on….
2. Fur-kids shouldn’t have dessert. You get to eat it all yourself!
3. If your date with your fur-kid starts to go south there’s always the crate….
4. No stress over break-ups because what crazy person would want to get rid of their fur-
kid, right?
5. Your fur-kid couldn’t care less about what you look like. Or if you’ve showered. Or
shaved. They just love YOU.
6. We’re pretty sure tossing a ball or twitching some string would be considered a perfect
date by your fur-kid. Maybe not so much a “people” date.
7. You’ll never be yelled at for having your face in your phone at dinner. A few gentle pats
on the head and your fur-kid is happy as a lark. Scroll on…
8. Netflix and chill with your pet means…well….Netflix and chill. Snuggles included.
9. Flowers are candy are poisonous to fur-kids. A $5.00 chew toy will keep them adoring
you forever. Or until they gut-it to kill the “squeak” and need a new one. Either
way…cheap date!
10. Did we mention fur-kids can’t talk? HAHA!
Going on a Valentine’s date and need a pet sitter or dog walker to show your fur-kid some love? Let Pet and Home Care meet your pet sitting and dog walking needs this Valentine’s
Day. Our trained professionals know exactly what to do to make your baby feel spec-pup-ular if you choose a “people” date over your pet.

Winter Pet Care Tips!

You know how the song goes …”oh…the weather outside is frightful….”, right? Winter-time and the inclement weather that it brings can be “frightful” for your fur-kids too, but your pet care professionals at Pet and Home Care are here to help you get your pets safely through the winter months. Read on…..
At Pet and Home Care, we suggest that all of our clients do a “garage check” when it starts to get cold (and all year long!). Clean up any chemical spills and make sure that salt-based ice melters are put away. Antifreeze is DEADLY. Fur-kids like it because of its sweet taste and 1 or 2 teaspoons is all it takes to kill your dog or cat. Salt can be a skin-irritant. Make sure that you wash your dog’s feet when they come inside if you’ve been out walking them to prevent chemical burns.
Puppies, senior dogs and sick dogs are more sensitive than others to cold temperatures. Make sure that if you have a puppy, senior dog or a pet with a compromised immune system stays in a warm, dry environment, otherwise you may expose them to hypothermia, frostbite or worse.
Skip the haircut! Do you shave your pets down in the summer? You’ll want to skip that haircut in the winter. They need their winter coats…just like we do! Dogs with short coats or low body fat like Chihuahuas, Greyhounds, etc. will definitely thank you for a warm sweater or their very own winter coat when it gets cold.
Working long hours or traveling and need a pet sitter or dog walker this winter? Let Pet and Home Care meet your pet sitting and dog walking needs this winter. Our trained professionals know exactly what to do to keep your fur-kids safe and warm during the winter months. Call us or email us today!
Winter Weather Reminders!
With yesterday’s winter weather, we thought it was a good time to remind our clients of our winter weather policy. If you need to cancel our services due to bad weather, our 12-hour cancellation policy is waived when schools or the government closed due to snow or ice, when road conditions appear dangerous, or temps are below freezing. During bad weather, if you do not cancel, we will still attempt to get to every home when the roads are safe enough to drive on. If we do have delays, we will contact you right away.
We will still walk dogs during bad weather, but will limit our time outside for them to do their business, then spend the rest of the visit playing and loving them inside. If you have any special requests, please let us know.
Don’t forget to keep pathways clear of ice and snow for the safety of your pet and their sitter. Please salt walkways and steps too. If you are traveling during the winter, please be sure to make snow removal arrangements, and leave a towel and jacket or sweater out for your pups, and wipes for their paws to get any salt off. Also, remember that garage codes do not work if there is a power outage so be sure to have a backup method of entry like a lock box if we usually enter through the garage.
Stay safe this winter!

Tips For Taking Holiday Photos With Your Pets

[et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ admin_label=”section” _builder_version=”3.22″][et_pb_row admin_label=”row” _builder_version=”3.25″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”3.25″ custom_padding=”|||” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” _builder_version=”4.4.8″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” hover_enabled=”0″]

Our pets are part of our family, so of course, we would include them in our family photos and holiday cards. Getting them to take a good photo can be difficult though, so we wanted to help you out with a few tips.
1. Minimize distractions. Our pets can have the attention span of a millennial, so it’s
important to find a space to take photos in which there are as few distractions as
possible—especially for our camera-shy pets. That way, if the photographer needs to
find a way to get your pet to look at the camera, it will also be able to do so without other
distractions getting in the way.
2. Cute outfits. Dressing up for photos can be one of the most fun parts of family photos.
Coordinate outfits for the whole family, including your fur babies, or get them a cute
holiday appropriate costume.
3. Treats. Always have treats on hand to reward good behavior.
4. Attention grabber. In addition to treats, it’s a good idea to have a good attention
grabber, like a squeaking toy to which your pet responds.
5. Have patience. If you’re trying to get a particular shot, but your pet is not cooperating,
move on to the next shot and then come back to it. When you do get the shot, remember
to give your pet a treat to reward her/his good behavior.
6. Make it a mini party. If you turn it into a fun event, your pets will enjoy it too and you
can catch some fun candid shots. This will help kick up the festive nature and add a nice
background.
7. Short and sweet. To avoid irritating your pets with long photo sessions, try to keep
holiday photo sessions short and sweet. This will ensure a more natural and fun pose
from your pet as well.
Holiday photos should be as fun and festive for you as it is for your loved ones to receive the photos. Try these tips out for your holiday photo shoot!

How To Responsibly Give A Pet As A Gift!

Holiday cat
It’s the holiday season, which means many of us are thinking of thoughtful gifts for our loved ones. Maybe you’re thinking of giving a pet as a gift to your significant other, your kids, or other loved ones.
Giving a pet as a gift is quite a big gift, so we thought we’d share tips on how to responsibly give a pet as a gift:
1. Surprise! Giving a pet as a gift shouldn’t be a total surprise. Be sure the person(s) you
would like to give a pet to desires a pet and can take care of the pet. Ask yourself
questions like do they work long hours? Does their home allow pets? What kind of pet
would be suitable in their home? It’s also good to know what kind of pet they would like.
If your gift recipient prefers a mellow cat, it’s probably not a good idea to get them a
hyper dog.
2. Gifting to children. When gifting pets to children, young or angsty teens, be sure your
kids understand good pet responsibility. Even young children can help with pet care,
teach them how to play with pets and how to keep pet belongings tidy.
3. Basic pet care package. When giving a pet as a gift, it is also a good idea to include a
care package with some basics such as a bed or crate, leash, food and treats, and litter
materials. This way the gift recipient does not have to suddenly rush out to buy supplies
needed for the pet.
4. Adopt don’t shop! There are many pets that need a good home, so this holiday
season, consider adopting from a shelter if you plan on giving a pet as a gift. Adopting
can make an incredible gift, not just for the gift recipient, but for the pet, too!
5. Secure a pet sitter! Be sure to find a local, trusted pet care company like PHC that will be available to help when the new pet parent is at work or out of town. Planning ahead will help ensure a successful relationship with the new pet and their family. Consider buying a gift card too that will help them with their first pet sitter bookings!
Giving a pet as a gift can be a wonderful idea, just remember to do so responsibly so that the pet and its new owners can be prepared to provide the most loving home!
Happy howlidays!

Keep Your Pet Safe On Halloween!

Halloween is a fun and festive time for families, and even though our pets look oh-so cute in their little superhero or cat burglar costumes, Halloween can pose very serious threats to their safety. Pet and Home Care is here to provide tips to keep your pet happy and safe this spooky season!

  • Keep pets inside and away from the door! Similar to Independence Day, Halloween has a high rate of lost pets reported. Dogs may become anxious or territorial from frequent trick-or-treaters, and even spooked from certain costumes. It’s vital to keep pets confined and away from the door. This goes for cats too! Want to take extra precaution? Book a stay at our Pet Resort to ensure your pooch has a relaxing night away from the commotion.
  • Stash the treats! Chocolate is especially hazardous for animals, and can even be lethal in large doses. Keep an eye for symptoms of chocolate poisoning. Sugar-free candies containing the artificial sweetener xylitol can also cause serious problems for pets.
  • Watch your step! Make sure to keep wires, decorations, electric cords and lit jack-o-lanterns out of reach from your fuzzy friend.
  • Give a pal a pumpkin! Pumpkin supports digestion, boosts the immune system and helps keep fur and skin healthy. Try adding a dollop of pureed pumpkin to your pet’s dinner for a tasty, festive treat!

October Is Adopt A Shelter Dog Month!

October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, and you can help support the ASPCA’s #FindYourFido Campaign! The campaign engages animal advocates across the country to adopt and to share profiles of adoptable dogs in their communities on social media in hopes of helping them find loving, safe homes. Here is how you can help:

Adopt: Thinking about adding a new furry friend to your family? If you are ready to open your heart and home to a homeless animal in need, consider adopting a pet from your local shelter this month. you can use the ASPCA’s handy shelter database tool to find adoptable pets in your area.

Fundraise: What better way to celebrate your love of dogs than to host a fundraiser in their honor? Join us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for 31 Days of Rescue Dogs! All you have to do is post one photo a day of your favorite rescue dog for 31 days on your favorite social media channel using the hashtag #31DaysOfRescueDogs. Ask your friends and followers to donate $1 a day to your Team ASPCA fundraiser page in exchange for 31 days of adorable doggie photos. Just $31 can help provide food, shelter and the chance at a loving home for a dog in need.

Give: While not everyone can adopt a dog this October, the good news is that you can still help find loving homes for pets in need by making a gift to the ASPCA today. Protect Pets From Fleas, Ticks & Heartworm!

Pets should be on an effective veterinary-recommended flea and tick protection product, and it’s even more important to be extra vigilant in the summer to keep these nasty critters at bay.

Fleas: There’s no faster way to dampen a summer break than with a flea infestation. Their bites can cause itchy, red bumps that lead to excessive scratching and irritated skin, making both you and your pet miserable. Maintain a regular grooming schedule to keep an eye on potential infestations.

Ticks: Widespread through North America in grass and wooded areas, ticks transmit diseases that are very dangerous to people and pets. Click here for the CDC’s recommended steps for tick removal.

Heartworms: Most common on the East Coast, heartworm disease is life-threatening to animals. These parasitic worms are spread through mosquito bites and can cause severe organ damage or death. Discuss with your vet about the best products for your pet to prevent heartworm disease. Learn more about heartworm from the FDA here.

June Is Adopt-A-Shelter-Cat Month!

Are you thinking about adding a furry new friend to your family? June is Adopt-A-Shelter-Cat month and the purrrfect time to save the life of a kitty in need. Here are some things you should know before adding a feline friend to your crew.

Consider your lifestyle and personality traits to find a kitty you mesh well with. If you’re more laidback and mellow, consider an adult cat rather than a young kitten.

Patience is key. Cats can be slow to adjust to their new environments more so than dogs. While you give your pal time to settle into her new home, it may be best to confine her to a single room in the beginning to establish a sense of security.

If you are unable to adopt but will want to support, there are plenty of ways to get involved. Donate to your local shelter, share adoption opportunities on social media, volunteer your time at a rescue group or even sign up to be a foster parent.

Together, we can save them all!

May Is Pet Cancer Awareness Month!

May Is Pet Cancer Awareness Month! As pet owners, we do everything we can to keep our beloved animals happy and healthy, but sadly cancer is the #1 disease-related killer of dogs and cats. Here are some common symptoms, early warning signs and tips for prevention.

An Enlarged or Changing Lump: A lump on your pet that is changing shape or texture quite rapidly should be biopsied by a vet immediately.

Chronic Weight Loss: If you notice your pet is losing weight and he hasn’t been put on a diet, it could be an indicator of cancer or serious illness. Take your pet to checked as soon as possible.

Chronic Vomiting or Diarrhea: Chronic and unexplained vomiting or diarrhea suggests serious gastrointestinal issues, like a tumor. You may need to have your pet undergo an ultrasound, radiograph, or endoscopy to find the cause of the problem.

Wellness Checks: Taking your pet to the veterinarian for a wellness check every year or 6 months is vital in disease and cancer prevention.
