Springtime Safety Tips!

With the change of season, we set our sights on household cleaning and spending more time outdoors. Put a spring in your step with these safety tips from the
ASPCA to keep your furry friend happy and healthy!

Spring cleaning is a tradition in many homes, though it’s necessary to be mindful when using products that contain chemicals that are harmful to your pet. Check which of your household cleaning products are dangerous for your pal here.

Did you know animals can experience springtime allergies just like you? Dust, bugs, pollen and plants can trigger allergic reactions in pets. Keep an eye for excessive sneezing, itchy or irritated skin, or even anaphylactic shock from insect stings and bites. If you believe your pet has an allergy, please visit your veterinarian right away.

Warmer weather means more time to play outside…and the potential to wander off! Make sure your dog or cat is up to date on all current vaccinations in addition to updating new addresses or phone numbers on tags and microchips.

Keep Your Pets and Sitters Safe This Winter!

Karma is Pet and Home Care’s Pet of The Month!

With the New Year comes uncertain weather conditions, so it’s important to remember basic pet safety in the winter months. Shoveling your sidewalks and entryways keeps your sitter and furry friend safe against potential injuries from slipping on ice. If you choose to salt your walkways, keep in mind that ice-melting salt can be harsh on delicate paws. Perhaps consider outfitting your pup with booties! It’s also essential to keep a clear path to your pet’s usual potty spot, as dogs can become reluctant trudging through the snow to eliminate.

HAPPY HOWL-OWEEN!

With Pet and Home Care, it’s all treats and no tricks!

puppy-pumpkins

We all enjoy celebrating this spook-tacular holiday, yet Halloween can be dangerous for our boo-loved pets. Pet and Home Care has some helpful tips to keep your furry friends safe this Halloween. First, stash the treats! Chocolate is especially hazardous for animals, and can even be lethal in large doses. Keep an eye for symptoms of chocolate poisoning. Sugar-free candies containing the artificial sweetener xylitol can also cause serious problems in pets. Additionally, it’s vital to keep pets confined and away from the door-dogs may become anxious or territorial from frequent trick-or-treaters. Make sure to keep wires, decorations, electric cords and lit jack-o-lanterns out of reach. Click here to see PetMD’s Top 10 Halloween Safety Tips for Pets.

Dressing up your four-legged family member can be fun and festive; though it is essential to make sure your pet’s costume is comfortable and safe. Stay away from costumes that restrict movement, breathing or vision, and the ability to bark and meow. Be sure to put your pet’s costume on for a test run before the big night to check for discomfort, allergies, or abnormal behavior. If your pet’s costume passes the safety test, we want to see it!

Cooling off During the Dog Days of Summer

Man's best friend cooling down in the pool! One of the best things about summer is cooling off with a nice swim, especially if you can have a swimming buddy!

If you live near a dog-friendly lake or beach, or if you have a backyard pool, you should definitely encourage your dog to join you for a swim. But you may want to teach her a few basic lessons first, especially if she has never been swimming before.

Teach your pup to swim with these simple instructions.

Is Giving Your Pet Ice Cream Worth It?

Dog eating ice cream coneI scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream…well, maybe not all of us.
While it likely won’t do any serious damage, professional veterinarians do not recommend sharing your cold, sugary treat with your furry friends. Occasional licks can be justified, but refrain from buying that extra “puppy cone,” if only to prevent your dog from the delayed fatigue, and your carpets from the even more delayed reaction…

Hot pavement hurts everyone’s feet…even your dog’s!

dog-hot-pavementBeware of hot pavement when walking your dog this summer to avoid causing damage to their paws!

Imagine walking barefoot on pavement on a hot summer day. Not fun, right? While dogs may love going out for long walks during the warm summer months, it’s important to be sure that you avoid too much exposure to hot pavement. The heat can cause burns to their paws that can be very painful. For the sake of your own feet and the feet of your dogs, try to keep to grassy or shady areas!
