For millennia, Man’s Best Friend has trekked alongside our ancestors in perfect harmony. On this journey that spans 30,000 years and beyond, our four-legged friends have accomplished feats unparalleled by other animals, developing a keen ear and eye that perseveres in step with humankind. There blossomed thousands of years of compassion, loyalty and good old fashioned fun!

In the 21st century, man’s best friend is also man’s greatest ally, specializing in everything from being a professional couch potato, to patrolling runways, to helping detect cancer and alert and prevent diabetic issues! Check out these three awesome ways dogs are helping us shape a better future:

RUNWAY PATROL DOG – Piper, an adorably tenacious 7 year old border collie, is employed at a Michigan airport to help deter animals from congregating on runways and ultimately creating safety hazards.

Airports are required to provide some sufficient form of protection from the various hazards of curious wildlife and they usually achieve this by employing pyrotechnics, traps and sirens, but dogs are apparently the most effective way to ward of unwanted critters and this cool little collie can attest to that! Read more at Travel and Leisure.

DIABETES ALERT DOGS – Dogs have a very attuned sense of smell; with over 220 million olfactory receptors, dogs can use their noses to detect changes in blood sugar levels! With professional training, a diabetic’s canine counterpart is able to alert friends and family members when blood sugar levels drop or rise, helping to ensure the vigilance necessary to regulate this deadly disease.

CANCER DETECTION – Not only can dogs smell the differences in blood sugar levels, research shows that they can use their snouts to determine whether or not patients potentially have cancer as well! Malignant tissues release chemicals that have a different aroma, allowing dogs to pinpoint whether or not various DNA samples are cancerous or cancer free.

pahc-april-06-dog-manLOCAL VOLUNTEERING
It’s no secret that our pets provide an unlimited supply of affection and solidarity, so it’s only appropriate that we seek out their company to show us a good time and liven up the party. If your pup is well behaved in social environments, volunteering is a great way to get out, have fun and spread the cheer!

pahc-march-04-dogAlas, the flowers are blooming, the sun is shining and the grass is glowing in brighter greens than you’ve seen for the past five months. Ah, spring is in the air! Buddy can hear the birds chirping, the breeze rustling trees, the joggers pattering away at the pavement and the squirrels scampering up the trees to safety (oh, the sweet squirrels)! Don’t let allergy season hold you back; He wants in!

Of course, everything may LOOK gorgeous and inviting, but you’re worried about all those inconveniences-the bees, the bugs, the baking sun. We get it; but that’s no excuse! Break out the SP-50 and Off, we’ve got a few fun activities for you and your little guys that they’re bound to appreciate you for:

SCAVENGER HUNTS!

Easter is approaching; what better way to celebrate than a bit of family bonding with a good ol’ game of scavenger hunts? Renowned animal behaviorist Dr. Sophia Yin provides an awesome exercise that not only engages your little guys in the festivities but provides some training exercises as well!

EASTER EGG HUNTS!

Like the idea of a scavenger hunt but craving something a little more festive for EasterSunday? Put a little twist on the activities by dying your eggs any color but yellow, green or red! Yes, boiled eggs are fine for Fido as long as you make sure to peel them first (warning: beware of the impending flatulence)! Better yet, you can fill plastic eggs with your pet’s favorite treat or canned food and let them sniff every innocuous oval out!

SCENT TRAINING

Sniffing out treat-filled Easter eggs is a great way to engage your pet’s nose. The rewards of a mentally and physically stimulating activity like that are plentiful! In fact, there are a multitude of aromas to be whiffed this time of year and that’s bound to be a topic of interest for your furbabies. Dogs put over 200 million olfactory sensors to use, versus our measly five million. They rely on their snouts much more than we do, from greetings to warning signals to their equivalent of an email. Signing up for a scent tracking class could work wonders on their focus, confidence and overall mental and physical health!

Healthy Help

pahc-march-05-dog

THE BIRDS AND THE BEES

You hear the rhetoric everywhere: spay and neuter! At the surface, we see the rampant problems revolving around the overpopulation of stray cats and dogs. Shelters are crowded and innocent animals are reaching an untimely demise.
This alone should be enough to encourage any responsible adult to take the proper preventative steps. Unfortunately, that doesn’t always resonate. Still, it’s important to spread awareness and inform the benefits of fixing your pets.
Apart from stabilizing the shelter epidemic, a range of health benefits also highlight the pros of spaying and neutering your pets:

pahc-march-06-catSPRING CLEANING

Spring is springing which means cleaning! This March, take some time to treat your pets’ to a refresher of their own. From Nylabones to beds to crates, your pet’s belongings are bathing in bacteria. They’re thriving in the unattended cesspool like lavish little kings of filth.
If Buddy had thumbs, he’d take on the task himself, but he doesn’t so he needs your help! Of course, it’s always important to take the proper precautions when approaching deep cleaning. Certain disinfectants don’t mix will with your little ones.
Here are some helpful spring cleaning tips specifically aimed at maintaining your pets’ belongings without harming them:

Protect Your Heart

feb-newsletter-img-2Mama always said life was like a box of chocolates–full of dangers detrimental to your pets! The irony behind holidays aimed at celebrating the joys of life and the ones you love is that they’re almost exclusively unsafe for those nearest and dearest to your heart–your pets. Valentine’s Day is no exception.
When you think of the approaching festivities, you imagine seas of red, clouds of pink, the twinkling eyes of a passer-by as they cling close to a bunch of roses, a shiny red heart-shaped box and a brigade of helium balloons fluttering behind in pursuit. But can you see it? Under that facade of merriment, can you spot the hazards threatening the very well-being of those you love most–the cardiac arrest in fudge-filled chocolate balls, the kidney failure behind that adorable assortment of flowers?

It’s time to take off those rose-colored shades and stop sugar-coating that special day. At this point, every dog owner is aware that chocolate is toxic, but it’s never too late for a reminder. The thing is, chocolate isn’t the only culprit! From lilies to xylitol to candles and even ribbons wrapped neatly around your gifts, the safety hazards are literally everywhere. Keep calm and carry on though; we’ve compiled some links to prepare you for that special day. Don’t stand by. Protect your heart:

First aid and CPR

CPR and first aid are very valuable tools necessary for saving your pets’ lives in the event of an emergency. Every pet owner should have some basic knowledge when it comes to facing serious situations that may arise in your every day life. Accidents happen and, sometimes, danger is unavoidable.

Having the confidence to recognize these events–from bloating to seizures to allergic reactions–and take action can mean the difference between your pet’s life and timely access to professional help.

We strongly encourage every pet owner to equip themselves with this information to ensure their little one’s safety. Classes are a great way to learn everything you can about first aid. Healthy Paws provides a variety of helpful educational courses.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

2015 is in our rear view mirrors and Buddy is peering out the window to the future of 2016 ahead. He can hear the city buzzing; the collective murmur is of a fresh start, of new horizons, and those tiny specks of golden light flecking the brim of your horizons are your aspirations. Everything you’ve been working towards culminates in this very year–or maybe not. Maybe this year only brings you one step closer, but the point is progress. With each waning year and each waking day, every man, woman and child strives for that one special thing. But what about your pets (yes, what about them)? Don’t they want to find happiness through self-improvement, adventure and success as well?

I found myself contemplating this very idea. Why else would Buddy spend countless hours of his day perched atop the sofa, staring out the window longingly?! So, with that, I decided to ask Buddy what his New Year’s resolutions were. This is what he had to offer; I invite you and your pets to find inspiration in his plans for the new year

BUDDY’S NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS:

GET OUT MORE
This is especially imperative for younger, developing pets, but Buddy’s insistent on new experiences and he’s eager to live it up. It’s important to socialize and familiarize your pet with the countless variables of waking life, from construction, honking horns and crooning sirens to stranger-infested coffee shops and grocery stores. When situations aren’t foreign, your furry ones aren’t frightened. This exposure is essential for a healthy, confident pet. Of course, make sure you’re taking the appropriate precautions and ensuring that they will behave safely in those environments. (Learn more on Youtube or at AHS)

LEARN A TRICK OR TWO
Buddy wants to impress his person’s friends and the other dogs at the park. On par with exposure, learning a few basic obedience cues can improve your pet’s problem solving skills, confidence and potentially save his/her life! Having objectives to focus on really soothes your pet’s anxious tendencies. Some breeds of dogs, for instance, were specifically bred to work (i.e. Australian Shepherds). Giving them a task to focus on may alleviate stress and allow just the mental stimulation they need to keep from chewing on your shoes and furniture, amongst many other naughty behaviors. Furthermore, the ability to properly communicate with your little one is priceless in the event of an emergency.

IMPROVE MY DIET
More than 50% of household pets in the U.S. are overweight, according to APOP! Buddy is embarrassed by his contribution to this unruly statistic and he wants to do something about it. He knows that a healthy diet can improve his overall health and even stifle impending diseases. He also wants to keep up with the other pups at the park, so he’s researching his kibble’s nutritional benefits and watching his calorie intake. (Learn more at Pet Diets)

MOTIVATE MY PERSON TO WORKOUT
Buddy thinks exercising with his person is a great way to spend their time bonding and he thinks he could be quite the motivational workout partner. Besides, he thinks his person could stand to lose a few pounds too. There are a ton of really cool things he wants to try, like hiking, Doga and agility training, as well as many other activities!
(Learn more at Huffpost or Animal Planet)

UPDATE MY CONTACT INFO
Buddy has been wearing the same collar and tags for the past 5 years. He has counted at least four moves (he ran out of paws) since the last collar he got and he’s pretty sure his tags still say 3253 Penelope St. He’d like to update that before his next late night rendezvous. The new year is a great time to take care of those simple yet extremely effective safety precautions.

Needless to say, Buddy has a busy year ahead. He’s excited to take on the challenge though and he’s exhilarated to have a bunch of furry, four-legged friends to accompany him on the journey. He’d like to wish you all the best of luck and a happy New Year!

Here’s a cool pro tip for turning your Pet Sitter Software into a “mobile app”:

Step 1: On your phone, go to the Pet Sitter Software and login.

Step 2: Once you’re on the homepage, look for options in a task bar at the bottom of your screen. Along with the forward/back, bookmark and tab icons, there is a sharing icon (an open square with an arrow pointing out of it). Look for the menu option on Android devices.

Step 3: Click on this icon; it will give you options to add to favorites, bookmarks, a reading list or your homes screen. Click on “add to home screen”, personalize the app name and click “add”.

Voila, you’re done! A thumbnail will appear alongside your other apps on your home screen, providing easy access to the Pet Sitter Software on your phone.

Holiday cheer is in the air! Sleigh bells are ringing; carolers are singing; family and friends and the like are all springing! It’s “that time of the year”.
With Thanksgiving in our rear view mirrors and Hanukkah here, and with Christmas and New Year’s quickly approaching; vigilant pet owners are on high alert for potential, unfamiliar variables that threaten to hinder the holidays. Fret not, busy bees, the internet is buzzing with tips and tricks that are sure to keep your holiday festivities stress free, safe and fun for you and your four-legged, furry, amphibian friends! Your friends at Pet and Home Care have collected some pro tips of our own just for the occasion:

Stay vigilant around trash cans, unattended plates and food with bones. Familiarize yourself with what’s toxic for your pet.
Make sure all decorations are secured and beyond your pet’s reach. Wires are an electric hazard when chewed, candles can be a fire hazard and certain plants (like mistletoe, holly and poinsettias) can be dangerous to ingest.
Place extra barriers around doorways to the “free world” and be cautious when guests are entering and exiting.
Supervise your pets around holiday guests, especially children. Be aware of the various stress factors and behavioral issues your pet’s face (i.e. thunderstorm/firework/separation anxiety, home & food guarding, stranger danger, etc.) and be prepared to prevent potential triggers.
Avoid products that may dry out or harm your pet’s pads, making them more susceptible to soreness and tearing. Try to avoid ice melting products that contain calcium chloride, magnesium chloride or a high amount of rock salt. Use appropriate protective balm when necessary and wipe their pads after treks outside of the house.
Keep pathways clear of ice and snow for the safety of your guests, pets and their sitters!

Pet and Home Care provides in-home pet care visits for any type of pet (dogs, cats, hamsters, fish, birds, you name it!), which includes feeding, dog walking, playing, pet waste cleanup, administering medication and, of course, giving oodles of attention to your pet(s)! In home visits also provide basic home maintenance services such as plant watering, rotating lights and blinds, collecting mail and newspapers, taking out or bringing in the trash and recycling and personalized home security checks for your peace of mind while you’re away.

This week is National Dog Bite Prevention Week

We’ve all been there before. Just strolling along on a leisurely walk with our dog when the mailman pulls up and hops out of his truck to make a few deliveries. While the loving pup at the other end of your leash might bark and leap excitedly towards the delivery person, you might have found yourself uttering the phrase, “It’s okay, my dog doesn’t bite.” Still, you watch the postal worker proceed apprehensively and hurry back to his vehicle.

The sad truth is that over 4.5 million people are bitten by dogs in America every year with over 800,000 of them requiring medical attention. The most frequent victims are children, the elderly and postal workers. Interestingly enough, most dog bites on young children take place during normal everyday activities with familiar dogs. As loving dog owners, it’s our responsibility to educate ourselves and our families about taking the proper steps to prevent dog bites and attacks on our loved ones and strangers.

To raise awareness for National Dog Bite Prevention Week the United States Postal Service recently released their list of U.S. cities where the most dog attacks occurred on postal workers in 2014. A total of 5,767 USPS workers were attacked last year. The announcement also includes some tips on how dog owners can take steps to ensure the safety of their local mail carriers and any other delivery workers that may approach your front door.

Celebrate Be Kind to Animals Week 2015

This week, from May 3rd through May 9th, marks the American Humane Association’s 100th annual “Be Kind to Animals Week”!

At Pet and Home Care we know that all of you pet owners are always kind to your pets. But this week, we urge you give a little extra love to your own companions. Also, think about ways you can contribute beyond just your own pets. All animals and living creatures that you might encounter on a daily basis—from the squirrels scurrying up the trees in your neighborhood to the small harmless spider you might find weaving a web on your back porch—deserve a little extra thought from all of us this week and beyond.

Easy ways to participate in “Be Kind to Animals Week”:

Volunteer at a local shelter, or adopt, rescue or foster a dog or cat in need. You can search HERE for animals in need near you.

  • Teach children to treat all living creatures with respect. Check out Kind News – a children’s magazine geared toward teaching our youth about the animals whom we all share the planet with.
  • Make an effort to purchase animal products that were raised humanely instead of in cruel conditions. For example, look for cage-free chicken meat and eggs in your local grocery store.
  • Report animal abuse to local officials.
  • Give your pet(s) some extra love and attention this week!

For more on how you can celebrate “Be Kind to Animals Week”, be sure to visit kindness100.org. There you will find links to pledge to be kind to animals all year round, make donations to the American Humane Association, learn about the 100-year history of celebrities and other public figures’ work toward this great cause, and educational documents you can download and share with kids in an effort to teach them more about treating animals kindly.

From all of us at Pet and Home Care, happy “Be Kind to Animals Week”! Now, where are those treats my dog loves…?

What our Customers Say!

Gus, Nessie and I want to say thank you for the wonderful job you did. Those two settled right in as though we hadn’t left, and that says it all.
I am so deeply appreciative of the caring way Jennifer and Irakli looked after the kitties. They are not the easiest of cats, and they were certainly very stressed at our long trip. There was a tremendous amount of extra work involved as well as excellent animal skills. Jennifer bore the brunt of the work, and there was a ton of it with all the kitty mistakes. I would never have known there had been problems, so the clean ups really worked. Extremely difficult cats!
