5 Must-Read Tips to Know Before Adopting a Cat

June is National Adopt a Cat Month! This is also the height of kitten season and most end up in shelters. According to the ASPCA, 3.2 million cats can be found in shelters every year!

A pet is a big responsibility but adopting a cat is one of the most fulfilling and rewarding things you can do. So, before you head to your local animal shelter or rescue service, below are:

5 Must-Read Tips to Know Before Adopting a Cat

1. Do not declaw your cat!

Clawing is natural and healthy behavior for a cat. Their claws are how they defend themselves. I know what you’re thinking…but they will destroy everything I own! Did you know that removing a cat’s claws make it more difficult for them to use the litterbox and causes lasting physical problems? Declawing a cat is even banned in many countries!

2. Do neuter/spay your cat.

Spaying or neutering your cat helps prevent uterine infections, tumors, and various cancers. Also, your female cat won’t go into heat and your male cat won’t stray away from home. Sounds like a win-win to me! Also, remember how many cats can be found in shelters? When there is no more room, healthy cats are often euthanized.

3. You will need essential supplies on hand.

Just like you, as a human, need plates and cups, food and water, and the Wi-Fi password; there are things you MUST have before you adopt a cat. Be sure to visit your local pet shop and pick up cat food, a water bowl, litter box, toys and a scratching post. Most other things can wait until your cat is acclimated to your space.

4. Yes, cat’s need grooming too!

How often you need to brush depends on your cat’s coat; sometimes once a day, or even a few times a week. Since we are NOT declawing our cat, don’t forget to trim those nails. Be consistent with their growing so they know what to expect. Trust me, cats don’t like surprises!

5. Vet, Vet, Vet!

The veterinarian is not just for when something is wrong. Ask your friends or family for recommendations. Schedule an in person visit to check on the location, cleanliness and organization of their office. Whichever vet you decide to choose, ensure your kitten gets his or her vaccinations and your adult cat their well visits.

No matter if you’re young or old, live in a house or an apartment, remember our feline friends when considering a new pet! Adopting a cat helps reduce the shelter populations, ensures an animal has a loving home, and it’s also good for YOUR heart!
